From Your Local Dustin’s: How You Can Help Your Community This Holiday Season

The holiday season is upon us and one of the best things about this time of year is all the joy we are able to spread! At your local Dustin’s we are passionate about our communities. That’s why we’re bringing you some of the ways you can get involved and give back. But serving your community doesn’t always mean leaving your home, so that is why we are bringing you options to stay home or go out to help others. Read on for just a few of the ways you can get involved with your community this holiday season.

Hand Out Care Kits To People Without Housing

Unfortunately, there are people in our communities who don’t have access to a lot of basic essentials. That’s why packing care kits for those without housing and then handing them out whenever you notice someone in need is a great way to spread a little joy this holiday season. Here are some things you can include:

  • Hygiene products

  • Warm clothing, like scarves, mittens or beanies

  • Gift cards to local grocery stores

  • Shoes

  • First-aid essentials

Volunteer At A Local Christmas Event

There are likely a lot of holiday events going on in your community this time of year, so now is a great chance to get involved. A lot of community events are led by non-profits or organizations that don't have a lot of funding. That’s why a great way to serve is by volunteering at some of these events in any way you can! Volunteer opportunities could include:

  • Dressing up as Santa or Mrs. Claus for a photo opportunity

  • Handing out candy at a parade

  • Using your talents for a show

Help Out At Your Local Homeless Shelter

Not only is packing care kits a great way to help those without housing but physically serving can be a great choice, too! The local homeless shelter near you probably needs some extra help. Here are some ways you can lend a hand:

  • Donate blankets and hygiene products

  • Serve warm food during meal times

  • Spend quality time with others

Donate Time Or Goods To Your Local Animal Shelter

Pets need some love for the holidays, too! If you’re more of an animal lover, serving at your local animal shelter may be your volunteer opportunity of choice. Check out some of these ways you can help out:

  • Foster a pet for the holidays

  • Donate bags of food, litter and toys

  • Spend time with the animals for an hour or two

Make Holiday Goody Bags For Kids In Need

Don’t forget about the kiddos! There are many children in the area that would love your help this holiday season and a great way to show some love is by donating some goody bags to kids in need at local shelters, foster care centers, and other child care facilities that need assistance. Some items to include in your goody bags could be:

  • Age-appropriate toys

  • Coloring books

  • Clothing

  • Hygiene products

  • Holiday candy and treats

  • Christmas cards

This time of year often brings a lot of joy for many people, but others may not find it as joyful because of unfortunate circumstances. But you can bring some light to their lives by serving in small ways that make a huge impact. Whether you stay home and pack care kits or head to your local shelter to spend time with those in need, there are so many ways to get involved. Thank you for loving on our community this holiday season!
